Clinical trials in Peru for Johnson & Johnson's COVID-19 vaccine to begin in October

Foreign Affairs Minister Mario Lopez affirmed that the Peruvian Government is committed to ensuring prompt access to the coronavirus vaccine and announced that the U.S. firm Johnson & Johnson will begin its clinical trials in Peru in October.

"The Government is committed to ensuring Peruvians' prompt access to the vaccine. We hope it will be in the first quarter of next year," he said in remarks to Canal N.

In this context, he described as "great news" that the U.S. firm Johnson & Johnson has considered Peru to conduct its Phase 3 clinical trials for its vaccine against COVID-19.

It should be noted that, weeks ago, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that Johnson & Johnson selected Peru to participate in Phase 3 of the clinical study for its candidate vaccine.

He recalled that British laboratory AstraZeneca will also carry out Phase 3 clinical trials of its candidate vaccine against COVID-19 in Peru this October.

Moreover, Lopez highlighted the agreements completed with various laboratories such as Pfizer and the Covax Facility mechanism in order to secure the doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. Moreover, the ambassador affirmed that the negotiations held with several companies are ongoing.

On the other hand, he explained that the payment to companies will be made on an established schedule.

The minister stated that the population can rely on the efforts undertaken to access the aforementioned vaccine.
