The Archdiocese of Cusco on Thursday announced that the Basilica Cathedral in the Imperial City will celebrate virtual and limited capacity in-person masses for Christmas and New Year.

The celebrations begin today with two masses scheduled at 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., which will be held virtually and in-person with limited capacity. They will be celebrated by Cusco's Archbishop Monsignor Richard Alarcon.

On December 25, Christmas masses will be held at 6 a.m., 8 a.m., and 10 a.m. They will be officiated by Cusco's Archbishop, accompanied by Monsignor Israel Condorhuaman, the administrator of the Cathedral.

Similarly, on January 1, 2021, the New Year liturgical celebration will take place at 6 a.m., 8 a.m., and 10 a.m.

The Archdiocese of Cusco issued recommendations to avoid COVID-19 infection, highlighting the correct and permanent use of face masks, face shields, and alcohol-based hand sanitizer, as well as the importance of social distancing.

The faithful who may be vulnerable to COVID-19 are encouraged to stay at home and participate in the celebrations that will be live-streamed by social networks of the Archdiocese.

On the other hand, he explained, the Basilica Cathedral's capacity will be limited to 100 people, a third of its total capacity.

"The birth of Baby Jesus must be the center of our faith on these days. These celebrations are special. We are celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ amid this pandemic, so we have to be responsible to defeat this virus. To do so, we must act responsibly, by taking care of our family," the prelate expressed.
