Chief of Staff Ernesto Alvarez reaffirmed that the first pillar of the President Jose Jeri's administration is the fight against crime and citizen insecurity to make Peru a safer place.
In an interview with Radio Nacional, the Prime Minister noted that the problem of extortion and contract killings has been taking root for years and, therefore, addressing it will require the efforts of both the current and next administrations.
"But we have to lay the groundwork, and this is basically based on intelligence work because it is similar to terrorism," he maintained.
In this regard, Alvarez Miranda highlighted the decision to unify the intelligence departments of the National Police, the Armed Forces, the National Penitentiary Institute (INPE), as well as the Financial Intelligence Unit (UIF) in order to also track the money managed by organized gangs.
"We trust that police intelligence will gradually identify those who control the gangs, those who truly centralize the information and organize the criminals' operational activities. That will take time," he stated.
The head of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers (PCM) emphasized that the fight against crime will require the collaboration of everyone, authorities and civil society, which is why neighborhood councils and mayors have been incorporated into this effort, in accordance with the supreme decree that declared the state of emergency in Metropolitan Lima and Callao.
"The fight is tough, it will be uniquely tough and prolonged, but society must win," he stated.
On the other hand, he noted that the government is studying what immediate measures can be taken to combat illegal mining, which affects the quality of life of Peruvians.
"This issue must be addressed with a profound reform of the legal structure of mining in the country," he stated.
