Official Journal "El Peruano" Celebrates 200 Years of History
The Official Journal "El Peruano" commemorates 200 years of institutional life this Wednesday, October 22, establishing itself as the oldest circulating newspaper in Latin America.
Founded on October 22, 1825, on the initiative of liberator Simón Bolívar, it was born under the name "El Peruano Independiente," a spokesperson for emancipatory ideas. After 19 editions, it changed its name to "El Peruano," a medium for communicating the governmental decisions of the nascent Republic of Peru.
"El Peruano" holds within its pages the official history of Peru and its relationship with Latin America and the Caribbean. In this sense, it is undertaking a digitization process of its editions, which is complete for the period 1826-1965.
"To date, we have digitized more than half a million pages, that is, all editions of the Official Journal between 1826 and 1965. An additional point: the newspapers from 2000 to the present are already digitized. This means we are very close to having the entire 'El Peruano' collection digitized," stated the director of "El Peruano," Félix Paz Quiroz.
"Another aspect to highlight is that throughout these two hundred years, 'El Peruano' has editions in English, French, and Portuguese, and within its pages, we can also find content regarding Peru's relationship with Latin American countries, Central American countries, and the world," he added.
Declared a Cultural Documentary Heritage of the Nation in Peru, the 19th-century editions of "El Peruano" are part of UNESCO's Memory of the World Register for Latin America and the Caribbean.
Within the pages of "El Peruano," we find important historical events such as the abolition of slavery in Peru, advances in women's rights, and the evolution of democracy in Latin America and the Caribbean; among other topics.
Throughout two centuries, "El Peruano" has known how to adapt to social, political, and technological changes, evolving from movable type printing to the free-access digital platforms that today guarantee the immediate dissemination of daily legal and news information.
