With the construction of an Interoceanic highway linking the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, Peru will be Brazil’s gateway to the Asia-Pacific region, said Miguel Vega Alvear, president of the Peru-Brazil Binational Chamber of Commerce and Integration.

Vega Alvear said that for the Latin Amercian giant, Peru is the best exit choice to the Pacific Ocean since the Interoceanic highways will allow a "binational road integration" while a Brazilian exit through Chile or Ecuador would mean crossing territories of third countries like Argentina or Colombia respectively.

“Brazil and Peru have a common border of 3000 kilometers which allows us to have a greater integration,” he noted.

Vega Alvear said that the upcoming visit of Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, accompanied by government authorities and a trade mission of 150 representatives from leading Brazilian comapnies, will help evaluate the progress of the Interoceanic Highway and trade integration.

“A business forum will be carried out to discuss the Interoceanic highway project and how it will change the relation between Brazil and Peru,” he stated.
