Ballestas Islands, Paracas, and Machu Picchu were most visited protected areas in Peru

The Ballestas Islands, the Paracas National Reserve, and the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu were the most visited protected natural areas by Peruvian citizens during the last long holiday weekend for the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul, from June 29 to July 2.


This information was provided by the National Service for Natural Areas Protected by the State (Sernanp), which stated that, in total, protected natural areas received 32,510 visitors in said period of time.


According to Sernanp, the most visited protected natural areas during this long holiday weekend were the Ballestas Islands, which are part of the Guano Islands, Islets, and Capes National Reserve System (7,249); the Paracas National Reserve (5,783); the Pampas de Ayacucho Historic Sanctuary (2,997); the Machu Picchu Historic Sanctuary (2,994); and the Tingo Maria National Park (1,944).

On the matter, the Superintendence of Ground Transportation of People, Cargo, and Goods (Sutran) recently reported that more than 1.2 million people traveled across the country during this last long holiday weekend, totaling 20,701 trips.


The most demanded destinations by travelers were located in central Peru, which comprises the regions of Junin, Pasco, Huanuco, Huancavelica, and Ayacucho, among others. In total, 7,714 interprovincial trips were made and 462,840 passengers were recorded in said period.

The south of Peru received 7,414 trips, thereby transporting 444,840 passengers.

Meanwhile, a total of 334,280 people traveled to the north of the country, which reported 5,573 trips.


Before the long holiday weekend, the Ministry of Foreign Trade and tourism (Mincetur) estimated that more than 760,000 people would travel all over the country, and the economic impact was projected to be US$70 million.

Furthermore, the government agency stated that the most visited major destinations would be Lima (36%), La Libertad (10%), Cusco (7%), Piura (7%), Arequipa (6%), Ica (5%), and Junin (4%).
