The Mayor of Lima, Renzo Reggiardo, stated that one of his administration's objectives is to put the Lima East train service, known as the Lima-Chosica train, into operation next year.
"We are confident that this train will be operational next year because, as previously reported, the donated train has been in Peru for several months and must be put into service. Therefore, those of us here are motivated to see this move forward quickly," he told the press.
He made these remarks after the signing of the Interinstitutional Framework Agreement for the implementation of the service, in which Mayor Reggiardo participated on behalf of the Metropolitan Municipality of Lima (MML), along with the Minister of Transport and Communications, Aldo Prieto. The executive director of ProInversión, Luis Del Carpio, and the president of the Urban Transport Authority for Lima and Callao (ATU), David Hernández, signed the agreement.
This agreement aims to accelerate the work to launch this train, which will directly benefit thousands of residents in the districts of East Lima, reducing their travel times.
Trial Run
Regarding the trial run, Reggiardo indicated that it is expected to begin, in the best-case scenario, in the first quarter of 2026.
"There is a willingness to have the service operational in the first quarter. However, I don't want to give a specific date," he said.
He added, however, that if this is not the case, it could happen during the first half of 2026.
The mayor of Lima stated that this agreement embodies the joint political will of the central government and the Municipality of Metropolitan Lima to address one of the main challenges facing the population: public transportation.

Agreement
Reggiardo also indicated that an agreement was reached to transfer the rolling stock to the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC), so that the MTC, together with the Private Investment Promotion Agency (ProInversión), can continue the process that has been underway to date.
According to the agreement, the MTC commits to collaborating in determining the necessary institutional and legal actions, ensuring that the project aligns with national policies on mobility and sustainable transport.
“This agreement is a fundamental step toward realizing an integrated vision for metropolitan transport. The coordinated work among all the institutions involved will be essential to move forward in an orderly and sustainable manner,” stated Minister Aldo Prieto.
To this end, the Urban Transport Authority (ATU) will participate in the planning and future operation of the service within its area of responsibility, ensuring the integration of the system with the metropolitan transport network.
For its part, ProInversión will support the structuring of private participation in the design, financing, implementation, and operation phases, under principles of transparency and efficiency.
The agreement will have an initial term of three years, automatically renewable. During this period, the institutions will work on developing assessments, technological validation of the donated rolling stock, and designing the project, always within the scope of their respective competencies and without any transfer of resources between the parties.
The projected route of the Lima East Train covers approximately 40 kilometers, connecting the districts of Cercado de Lima, El Agustino, Ate, Chaclacayo, and Lurigancho-Chosica, using 19 locomotives and 90 double-decker cars. This will allow progress toward a more integrated, efficient, sustainable, and, above all, more dignified public transportation system.
