Peru's Alternate Senior Official to APEC Victor Muñoz on Friday announced that the roadmap to promote the development of low-emission hydrogen (such as green hydrogen) in Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) members will be ready next August.

"It is a topic that will be discussed at APEC meetings at the proposal of Peru. The objective is to serve as a repository of good practices, good experiences, public policies that have worked out, with the aim of developing low-emission hydrogen," he told Andina news agency.

This roadmap must be approved by Energy ministers at the corresponding meeting to be held next August.

"The process begins this Saturday in Lima within the framework of the working group meeting," he explained.

So, with the approval of APEC members' Energy ministers this roadmap will be ready to be signed at the Leaders' Summit in November.

Muñoz explained that the interest in addressing this issue is due to the fact that low-emission hydrogen, particularly green hydrogen, is proving to be one of the most promising renewable energy sources for the immediate future.

The official explained that it is an energy source which is easy to transport, with very good possibilities in the commercial arena.

"It is an energy which requires the resources that we have in Peru, such as water and land, to be generated. There is plenty of opportunity in it, which will definitely contribute to changing the energy matrix," he stressed.

Financing

Peru's Alternate Senior Official to APEC underscored that there are also other related topics to be discussed, such as financing mechanisms, research, and markets.

"To sum up, there are several areas that conclude to consider the development of an industry like this one," he said.

Muñoz pointed out that financing is essential to boosting a sustainable energy transition.

"Financing must be secured. A mobilization of resources is necessary, which requires the convergence of interests of public and private sectors, because there are divergent priorities sometimes. At APEC, what we seek is to converge based on common aspiration," he stated.

In this sense, the high-ranking alternate official remarked that there is greater awareness of the importance of investing in sustainable solutions.

"Otherwise, we will increasingly face natural disasters, water shortages, and climate imbalances," he said.

Less contamination

It should be noted that Peru seeks the development of less polluting economic activities, through initiatives such as the promotion of green hydrogen, which is one of APEC Peru 2024 Presidency's priorities.

While gray hydrogen is generated from natural gas or methane, low-carbon hydrogen is produced through electrolysis powered by renewable energy sources, such as wind or solar ones, or fossil fuels combined with carbon capture and storage.

In this sense, the world economy's trend is to converge towards cleaner energy sources.
