The development of public policies to ensure the sustainability of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) members is one of the priority topics addressed in the thematic axes of preparatory meetings held in the southern city of Arequipa until Saturday.

"We will be discussing the issue of sustainability with Finance ministers. The idea is to learn about what the member economies' governments are doing to combat the harmful effects of climate change," said Peru's Alternate Senior Official to APEC, Victor Muñoz.

In this sense, it is recognized that climate change affects all economic activities in different ways.

"It is a reality that we see in the climatic phenomena that affect our country in a particular way, such as El Niño phenomenon," he stated.

What to do?

Muñoz mentioned that, in order to address this situation, it is necessary to mobilize enormous amounts of resources from both the public and private sectors.

"These meetings are important because it is the first time that Finance sector ministers of APEC economies are considering public investment in sustainability issues," he said.

This advance represents an important milestone because there have always been problems in attracting public and private resources to address this issue.

"So, the fact that public sector ministries of each economy have the will to meet to discuss this issue is of utmost importance," Muñoz pointed out.

Therefore, the issue of sustainable development is being incorporated. From it, APEC will build a thematic agenda that includes the financing of sustainability, he added.
