APEC economies trust Peru's leadership to foster thematic, substantial agenda

Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) member economies are confident in Peru's leadership so that a thematic and substantial agenda can be fostered during the meetings held in our country, said APEC Peru 2024 Presidency Working Group Chair, Ambassador Carlos Chavez-Taffur.

In remarks to Andina news agency from Urubamba in Cusco region on Thursday, Chavez-Taffur stated that after two years of pandemic, with everything halted, Peru —which had been on streak of organizing major events— sees in this opportunity a new possibility for positioning itself as a "hub" for international meetings.

"The fact that we are exercising the APEC Presidency for the third time in 2024 means that the other 20 economies have confidence in Peru's leadership to foster the thematic agenda, the substantial agenda (…)," he said.

The diplomat explained that it also means the degree of confidence in Peru's organizational capacity "to host these types of major events."

Decentralized meetings

On the other hand, Chavez-Taffur highlighted the fact that, during the APEC Peru 2024 Presidency, Meetings of Senior Officials and Ministers from the bloc's 21 economies take place in four other cities outside Lima.

"The idea is, of course, to involve as many people as possible in this type of events; this year we have four cities as venues; Arequipa has (already) hosted (events); afterwards, we have come here to Cusco to host two meetings; also, one week ago, there was a Senior Finance Officials' Meeting, and right now we are in the Tourism Ministerial Week," he said.

Subsequently, the diplomat specified that the 3rd Senior Officials' Meeting will take place in Lima. At the same time, the Agriculture Ministers' Meeting, where the issue of food security is to be discussed, will be held in the northern city of Trujillo, La Libertad region.

"And from there we will travel to Pucallpa, Ucayali region. In September we will host the Small and Medium Enterprises Ministerial Meeting (SMEMM); from there, we will be entering the final stage of what the APEC Peru 2024 Presidency is," he added.

Peru is hosting APEC for the third time after the 2008 and 2016 editions.
