Andean Community expresses concern over events affecting governance in Peru

12:20 | Lima, Sep. 13.

Presidents of the Andean Community member countries Jeanine Añez (Bolivia) Ivan Duque (Colombia), and Lenin Moreno (Ecuador) expressed "deep concern about the events that take place in Peru, threatening its stability and governance."

In a statement, they urged Peruvian authorities "to avoid actions that may jeopardize the legitimate exercise of power and the democratic institutional political process" of the country, thereby ensuring favorable conditions for the conduct of general elections next year, especially in a situation in which the world —particularly the Latin American region— is strongly affected by the spread of COVID-19.

"The population is experiencing hard times due to this pandemic, which must be faced with the joint and responsible actions that the situation demands. The population deserves authorities whose efforts focus on creating conditions to fight the virus, which is claiming lives every day," the leaders said.

"We encourage a prompt solution to this situation, based on dialogue, within the framework of the current constitutional order and in strict adherence to the balance of powers. The latter is an essential element for the preservation of democracy," they added.

Finally, the Presidents of Bolivia, Colombia and Ecuador called for focused efforts to address the health emergency and continue working for the well-being of Peruvians and the region as a whole.
