Morocco joins Andean Community as observer member

13:15 | Lima, Jul. 9.

The Kingdom of Morocco was presented as an observer member of the Andean Community (CAN) during the 20th meeting of the Andean Presidential Council recently held in the city of Bogota (Colombia).

This status granted to Morocco reinforces its position as a privileged interlocutor in Latin America and consolidates its position as a partner in the region, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates indicated in a release.

This adhesion will enhance the process of rapprochement between Morocco and Latin America, within the framework for strengthening the opening policy sponsored by His Majesty King Mohammed VI, said the same source.

Morocco enjoys observer membership status in nine regional organizations; four in the parliamentary sphere (Parlacen, Foprel, Andean Parliament, and Parlatino), as well as SICA, OAS, SEGIB, AEC, and the Pacific Alliance in the economic field.

Morocco's attachment to this Andean group —which has its roots in the common historical-cultural heritage and in linguistic influence— is also a recognition of the reforms undertaken by the King to build a modern and democratic Morocco.

The Andean Community (CAN) is made up of Peru, Bolivia, Colombia, and Ecuador. Those countries account for around 23% of the surface and population of Latin America.
