The President of the Republic Dina Boluarte on Tuesday proposed a firm and clear alliance in order to stop environmental crimes that affect the Amazonia.

Within this framework, the Head of State affirmed that her administration "is willing to allocate resources, as well as to advance in the conservation and sustainable use of our forests."

"Here, I propose a firm and clear alliance to stop environmental crimes, namely illegal logging and mining; drug and species trafficking; and the pollution that destroys our Amazonia," she stated.

Mrs. Boluarte specified that as the first woman to assume the Presidency of the Republic in Peru, she participates in the Amazon Summit, with the purpose of defending the Amazonia and promoting its comprehensive, inclusive, and sustainable development.

"We hope that this summit will send a clear message to the world: we, the Amazonian countries, fully assume our sovereign responsibility, but we need the active and concrete support from the international community to overcome our challenges," she expressed.

The top official said more international cooperation, as well as the concrete and timely support from countries with the greatest resources are necessary, "based on the principle of common responsibility, but differentiated."

"We are convinced that, instead of acting in a separated manner, Amazonian countries must articulate all our efforts before the cooperating governments, global funds and multilateral banks, particularly the regional one, to obtain new resources geared towards national funds, ecosystem services payment mechanisms, green and carbon bonds, which are alternatives that must be worked on jointly," she specified.

The president assured that all efforts undertaken at the Amazon Summit will allow countries to be "in better conditions to adopt the necessary decisions to harmonically align their environmental agendas."

"We want the Belem Summit to also constitute a watershed for our organization, the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization, which in recent years has promoted valuable and practical projects, overcoming highly-limited human and financial resources in a very meritorious manner," she stated.

Moreover, Mrs. Boluarte indicated that it is time for ACTO member countries "to stand united in the main capitals and multilateral forums," where the future of the planet is discussed, starting with the next UN General Assembly and COP28.

"I reaffirm our firm commitment to South American integration and cooperation in favor of sustainable development," she added.
