100 days of quarantine: EsSalud discharged over 56,000 patients across Peru

15:10 | Lima, Jun. 23.

Today marks 100 days since Peruvian authorities declared a state of emergency in the country to curve the spread of COVID-19, and the Social Health Insurance System (EsSalud) notes that it has learned great lessons and confronted strong challenges that led it to adopt a series of strategies in order to mitigate the impact of the virus, obtaining important results in record time.

EsSalud reported that 56,756 insured or uninsured patients have been discharged from hospital and released from home isolation since the confinement started.

"We have seen first-hand the painful departure of COVID-19 patients, but also their recovery. Today, 100 days after Peruvian authorities declared a state of emergency, nearly 57,000 patients have been discharged," EsSalud Executive President Fiorella Molinelli underlined.

In addition, she explained that the institution has increased its care capacity nationwide, going from 392 hospital beds in March to 7,359 to date.

Moreover, Molinelli informed that the number of intensive care unit (ICU) beds increased from 122 in March to 524 to date.

"This increase in the supply of beds reflects, with tangible results, that the institution responds to this great challenge, which requires speed to adapt the hospital infrastructure and improve medical care conditions for mild, moderate and seriously ill patients," the EsSalud head said.

She went on to explain that —at first— EsSalud earmarked 524 ventilators for COVID-19 patients, and that another 150 will be added soon, which will be distributed in the 29 networks throughout the country, giving priority to the regions where demand is increasing.

"These new ventilators will increase the EsSalud ICU capacity nationwide by 40%," she added.
