Residents and tourists in Helsinki now have the opportunity to view a selection of Peruvian handicrafts—specifically “retablos” (altarpiece-style boxes) from the Ayacucho region- at an exhibition hosted at the NH Collection Grand Hansa hotel, located in the historic center of the Finnish capital.

The exhibition, titled “The Ayacucho Retablo, Art and Tradition of Peru,” was inaugurated by the Embassy of Peru in Finland on October 19 and will remain open to the public, free of charge, until November 6 of this year.

The opening ceremony brought together representatives from Finnish institutions, members of the private sector, the diplomatic corps accredited in Finland, and members of the Peruvian community residing in the country.

In his welcoming remarks, Peru’s Ambassador to Finland, Renato Reyes Tagle, highlighted the significance of the Ayacucho retablos as an artistic expression that blends historical, religious, and cultural elements.

He further explained to the attendees that these works represent the traditions and various facets of daily life within Andean communities, offering a window into the cultural richness and diversity of Peru.

The collection of retablos showcases both the creativity and skill of the artisans from Ayacucho, as well as the continuity of a tradition passed down from generation to generation.

As part of the opening event, guests enjoyed a toast featuring the pisco sour, the Peru’s signature cocktail.

Once the exhibition in Finland concludes, the retablos will be transported to Sweden to continue their tour across the Nordic countries.
