presided over a ceremony Tuesday morning honoring the figure of Peru's Grand Admiral, Miguel Grau Seminario, at the facilities of the Peruvian Consulate General in Miami, the United States.
The laying of a wreath at the Knight of the Seas' bust took place as part of the welcome ceremony for the B.A.P. Union sailing training ship in the U.S. metropolis.
The ceremony was attended by the Chief of the General Staff of the Peruvian Navy, Vice Admiral Julio Cacho; the Defense and Naval Attaché at the country's Embassy in the U.S., Rear Admiral Oscar Oliva; the commander of the B.A.P. Union, Captain Juan Jose Roncagliolo; and the Consul General of Peru in Miami, David Vergara.
The tribute recalled the national hero, whose significance went beyond the naval sphere, making him a figure recognized worldwide as he combined unwavering courage in combat with a humanistic ethic that earned him the title of Knight of the Seas.
The B.A.P. Union —a source of pride for the Navy and a traveling embassy that takes Peru to the world through its training voyage— shares the name of the former Union corvette —a Peruvian warship during the War of the Pacific, whose first commander was Miguel Grau himself.
The sailing ship's presence in Miami reaffirms Peru's commitment to projecting an image of a diverse and multicultural country that strengthens ties of peace, culture, and friendship on the international stage.
