He made the statement during the second regular session of the Machu Picchu Management Unit's (UGM) Steering Committee.
The UGM is an intersectoral body that brings together the entities involved in protecting and sustainably managing the country's natural and cultural heritage.
During the session, actions were discussed to enhance the comprehensive management of the Machu Picchu Historical Sanctuary, focusing on security, heritage conservation, visitor management, and compliance with Peru's international commitments to UNESCO.
Leon reaffirmed the need to maintain coordinated management that makes it possible to reconcile the conservation of the sanctuary's ecosystems and natural values with responsible public use.
Likewise, initiatives were reviewed to improve operational communications within the Machu Picchu Historical Sanctuary and make gradual progress toward modernizing the ticket sales system through virtual channels.
Visitor management
These actions will help streamline visitor management and strengthen security, in coordination with the mechanisms for controlling entry to and managing the llaqta (Inca city).
The meeting also highlighted the continuation of guidance, awareness-raising, and monitoring activities carried out by the National Service of Natural Areas Protected by the State (Sernanp) along the Inca Road Network.
These activities are aimed particularly at promoting compliance with the rules of conduct and preventing the consumption of alcoholic beverages during visits.
Through its participation in this intersectoral body, Minam reaffirms its commitment to conserving the Machu Picchu Historical Sanctuary and to coordinated management aimed at protecting its natural and cultural values and ensuring an orderly, safe, and responsible visitor experience.
