Peru: PNP detains ONPE's Electoral Management chief in flagrante

12:58 | Lima, Apr. 13.

The Peruvian National Police (PNP) Anti-Corruption Directorate (Dircocor) has detained in flagrante the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) Electoral Management Chief, Jose Samame Blas.

The detention was carried out for the alleged commission of the crime of omission, refusal, or delay of official acts.

"The action was carried out in strict compliance with the law, as part of the fight against corruption," the PNP stated.

Various media outlets reported on the resignation letter submitted by the official to ONPE's head, Piero Corvetto.

In the letter, Samame Blas acknowledged "logistical failures" that affected the normal deployment of electoral materials at various polling places in the city of Lima, generating delays and complications in the installation of polling tables.

"And, being responsible for overseeing these distribution tasks, I acknowledge responsibility and deeply regret what happened; therefore, I submit my resignation from the position and make myself available for all corresponding investigations," the document stated.

"I make this decision so as not to hinder or raise suspicions regarding the integrity, transparency, and conduct of these elections; I recognize the commitment and valuable work that ONPE has been carrying out for the best development of these elections," it added.
