A teacher by profession, who comes from a family dedicated to farming activities,
He was born on October 19, 1969, in Tacabamba district (Cajamarca region), where he had been residing until recently.
He is the third of nine siblings. His parents are Ireño Castillo Nuñez and Mavila Terrones Guevara.
The President-elect studied at Octavio Matta Contreras Pedagogical Institute in Cutervo, and graduated in education from Cesar Vallejo University.
He also holds a master's degree in educational psychology from said institution.
From 1995 to the present,
Mr. Castillo has practiced his profession as teacher at educational institution 10465 in Puña village, Tacabamba —the first school he had attended as a child.
Political career
Before running for office —representing Peru Libre party— Mr. Castillo was a candidate for Mayor of the Municipality of Anguia —for Peru Posible party— in 2002.
He was also a committee member of said political party in Cajamarca region between 2005 and 2017.
Additionally, he has served as a teachers' union leader and led —together with other representatives— a strike in 2007.
