Peru's PM: We must be united to tackle health crisis

16:16 | Lima, Jul. 26.

Peru's Prime Minister Pedro Cateriano affirmed that dealing with the health crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic is not only the responsibility of the Government but also of all Peruvian citizens. Therefore, he called for unity in this struggle.

"I have said it repeatedly. The time for criticism and political judgements should come after the pandemic is over. This is the time to join forces, save lives and, of course, receive support from the private sector, from companies," he said.

"Therefore, this serious problem is not the duty of the Government alone. It is everyone's responsibility, (...) we must be united," the high-ranking official added.

Regarding President Vizcarra's upcoming address to the nation on July 28 (on the occasion of Peru's 199th Independence Anniversary), the Cabinet chief reiterated that emphasis will be placed on three aspects: to firmly continue the fight against COVID-19, to achieve the economic recovery, as well as to have free, neutral and democratic general elections.

Cateriano noted that an unimaginable health crisis is taking place, which has not only affected Peru but also wreaked havoc in many countries, thus affecting the global economy.

"We cannot continue with this situation of economic prostration, which is also a consequence of the health crisis," he added.

Additionally, the President of the Council of Ministers mentioned that the electoral campaign would spark discussion on issues of concern, such as the business action, the exploration and exploitation of natural resources, as well as the promotion of economic policies.
