Sports activities —including those of a professional nature— will remain closed due to the lockdown aimed at avoiding possible COVID-19 contagion risks, Prime Minister Violeta Bermudez affirmed on Thursday.

The high-ranking official specified that the Council of Ministers recently evaluated the requests made by the State-run Peruvian Sports Institute (IPD) and other private sport associations to resume their activities, but it was decided not to modify the decision.

"We have the intention and wish that athletes can continue with their training sessions. Nonetheless, most of the sports (categories) that have been raised pose a high risk of infection; they are group sports that involve coaches and groups of people," she told RPP radio and TV station.

After recalling that several soccer players who arrived from overseas were infected with COVID-19, the Cabinet chief said the quarantine seeks to avoid physical contact and crowds.

"Activities will not resume at this time, we ask them (athletes) to focus on individual training and avoid other practices for another 15 days," she emphasized.

The Prime Minister also commented that it is difficult for the Government to make these types of decisions.

However, it must do so to prevent people from being in spaces where they could be at risk and may put other people at risk, she concluded.
