Peruvian Foreign Affairs Minister Cesar Landa on Thursday announced that the slogan for the 52nd General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS), to be held in Lima on October 5-7, will be to fight together for equality and non-discrimination.

During the presentation of this venue before the OAS Permanent Council, the official affirmed it is the third time that Peru receives said commitment, adding that this will be the first (time) in which the face-to-face format will be resumed. Thus, the necessary efforts are being undertaken.

"Peru has deemed it pertinent to propose as the main theme of the next General Assembly the following slogan 'Together against Inequality and Discrimination' in the conviction that it is important to act to contain and reverse the deepening of social gaps, which given the pandemic and other factors have increased alarmingly in our continent," he said.

In this sense, the Cabinet member specified that growing inequality is an unavoidable concern linked to the present situation, but it is not a recent phenomenon.

"Over the years, exclusion historically affected minority populations, to whom democratic systems must guarantee fundamental rights, also to majority sectors such as women; in the same way, the adequate representation and participation of indigenous peoples and Afro-descendants are part of that agenda of democratization, which must continue being promoted by us and that requires the eradication of all forms of discrimination," he expressed.

The Cabinet member affirmed that other important concerns are added to these issues, such as economic instability, the challenges of the conflict in Europe, the migratory issue that has an impact on society, and global warming, among others.

"It is our duty, within the framework of multilateralism and in this space in which all countries of the region converge, to face them (these issues) in a united, creative, and effective manner; that is perhaps the greatest challenge for the Assembly in Lima next October," he added.

He added that United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet will soon visit Peru "as a sign of the conviction to continue strengthening and consolidating our democracy in the face of any internal or external threat."

Recommendation

On the other hand —regarding the United States' recommendation for its citizens to reconsider their plans to visit the South American nation— Mr. Landa remarked that citizen insecurity can be found in Peru as well as in other nations.

Thus, he referred to the insecurity events, which have happened for some time now, in the Valley of the Apurimac, Ene and Mantaro Rivers (VRAEM) and in the border region between Loreto (Peru) and Colombia.

"Therefore, it (insecurity) is not all over Peru, but, more precisely, in these two regions," the minister said in statements to RPP.

"Besides, it should be noted that the number of U.S. visitors has increased over the past year. In fact, 177,000 (U.S.) tourists came in 2021, and 157,346 have already visited the country between January and May this year," he added.

In this regard, the Cabinet member explained that citizen insecurity occurs in many cities around the world, so the policy that is being implemented by the Government involves strengthening efforts —with the support of the Peruvian National Police (PNP)— in a preventive manner.

"It is not just about taking enforcement measures, but developing social relations, while building a civic and citizen-centered environment," he concluded.
