Peru President: Spain is one leading strategic partner

18:00 | Lima, Nov. 12.

President Martin Vizcarra on Monday affirmed Spain is one of Peru's leading strategic partners, during his meeting with King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia at the Government Palace.

"We share values that guide our internal and external actions: defense and democracy consolidation, the full validity of the rule of law, the independence of powers, the respect for human rights, as well as the fight against corruption," the Head of State emphasized.

Furthermore, the European country is Peru's top direct foreign investor in key sectors such as energy, communications, transport, finance, and services.

"Their investments generate jobs and boost Peruvian economy's dynamism. It is the main trade partner from the European Union, and it represents an important target market for non-traditional product exports," the top official expressed.

"We want to continue working on strengthening this relationship of mutual benefit. We will explore new projects and joint initiatives," he added.

The Spain-Peru strategic partnership also covers diverse sectors such as culture, science, technology, innovation, and development cooperation.

In this sense, Peru is the principal recipient of Spanish collaboration in South America.

Likewise, the Inca country will need the European nation's support —which was essential for the Schengen visa waiver— as it intends to join the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

Bicentennial

On the other hand, the Head of State hailed the historical bonds between the two countries.

Moreover, President Vizcarra and King Felipe VI signed a roadmap within the framework of Peru's Independence Bicentennial Agenda

In this sense, the starting point will be the Inca country's participation in ARCOmadrid 2019 art fair —as the guest country of honor.
