The President of the Republic, Jose Maria Balcazar, on Sunday morning urged citizens to go to polling places and cast their ballots calmly and with confidence.

"We must give citizens confidence so they can go to the polls and vote calmly and serenely, because all guarantees have been provided," he said in remarks to RPP Noticias.

In that regard, the Head of State stressed that a high turnout could mark a "turning point" in favor of democracy, which in recent years has faced many changes due to political volatility.

"I believe this turning point will materialize as long as there is massive participation," he pointed out.

The president, who will cast his vote in the northern city of Chiclayo (Lambayeque region), said security will be guaranteed by the Armed Forces and the National Police, as well as the Prosecutor's Office and international observers.

This electoral process will allow citizens to choose the next President of the Republic, Vice Presidents, Senators, Deputies, and Representatives to the Andean Parliament.
