The
President of the Republic Dina Boluarte and
Interior Minister Vicente Romero on Thursday participated at the "First National Meeting of Prefects and Sub-prefects 2023" held in Lima with the aim of strengthening their management capacities.
During the activity, the Head of State stressed the importance of the work carried out by both prefects and sub-prefects in different regions across Peru.
These public officials, who are appointed by the
Ministry of Interior (Mininter), represent the Executive Branch within their jurisdiction and ensure the presence of the State across the national territory.
Thus, the dignitary placed emphasis on her commitment to strengthening prefects and sub-prefects and to prioritizing their competencies in public management, so that they can fulfill a more effective role at the service of their communities.
"We want to give you clearer roles. You are political authorities, but the country needs you to give higher priority to exercising the role of true public servants at the service of citizens," Mrs. Boluarte stated.
"Likewise, we want you to coordinate and articulate with sub-national authorities, communities, and Peruvians from all over the country who need to be heard and assisted," she added.
For his part,
Interior Minister Vicente Romero stressed the need for close coordination between sub-national authorities and the Central Government, with the aim of ensuring public safety and public order in different areas of the country.
"As political authorities of your respective regions, provinces, and districts, you are the local leaders in charge of coordinating and cooperating with the National Police, with representatives of the Executive Branch and civil society, so as to ensure safety and order in your communities. It is important that we work hand in hand," the government official said.

The National Meeting of Prefects and Sub-prefects brought together 140 out of the 490 political authorities designated to date, including 21 regional prefects, 86 provincial sub-prefects, and 33 district sub-prefects —the latter representing Lima region.
