Peru's Foreign Affairs Minister Carlos Pareja highlighted the importance and full validity of the Inter-American Democratic Charter at the
56th General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS), held in Panama City.
During the session, a resolution commemorating the 25th anniversary of this fundamental instrument for the defense and promotion of democracy in the hemisphere was adopted by consensus.
Minister Pareja recalled that it was in Lima, at the initiative of the late Ambassador Javier Perez de Cuellar, that countries of the Americas affirmed more than two decades ago that their peoples have a right to democracy and that their Governments are obliged to promote and defend it.
In this regard, the Cabinet member reaffirmed Peru's commitment to these principles.
Likewise, he stated that the commemoration should serve as an opportunity to renew the Charter's validity, strengthen its implementation, and reaffirm that the defense of democracy requires political will.
The government official also invited all member states to actively participate in the commemorative events scheduled to take place in Lima and Washington, D.C., in September to mark the 25th anniversary of the Inter-American Democratic Charter.
Bilateral meetings
During the talks, they discussed border integration, security, connectivity, regional cooperation, and preparations for the joint commemoration in 2027 of the bicentennial of diplomatic relations.
The two ministers agreed on the importance of preserving the momentum of the bilateral relationship in order to promote South American integration that benefits their citizens.
At this session, they discussed environmental cooperation, security, economic development, border integration, and the upcoming Conference of Defense Ministers of the Americas to be held in Cusco.
During the productive exchange, he also extended invitations to Deputy Secretary Landau and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio to attend the presidential inauguration ceremony in Lima, Peru, on July 28.
They exchanged opinions on issues of bilateral interest and reaffirmed their commitment to continuing cooperation, investment, and political dialogue.
Side event
At another point, Minister Pareja participated in the side event, "Bolivia: Protecting Representative Democracy from Violent Disorder."
During the discussion, the Foreign Affairs Minister reiterated the Peruvian Government's support for Bolivia's constitutional order and for President Rodrigo Paz's administration, while reaffirming its solidarity with the Bolivian people and Government in light of the current situation facing the country.
