President Vizcarra: Peru strengthens its citizen participation mechanisms

The president of the Republic, Martin Vizcarra, on Thursday affirmed that Peru is promoting dialogue and strengthening citizen participation mechanisms, as proven last Sunday with the extraordinary congressional elections —the first in the country's history.

"The social protests, which were registered in 2019 in several countries of the region, gave an alert about the urgent need to improve and strengthen the participation mechanisms in order to solve structural problems that transcend borders such as: poverty, inequality, and corruption," he expressed.

Within that framework, "Peru is promoting dialogue and strengthening citizen participation mechanisms."

According to the top official, these mechanisms were appreciated "during the legislative elections held last Sunday, in which our citizens headed to the polls to elect a new parliamentary representation."

Likewise, the statesman recalled that in the 2018 referendum the population had overwhelmingly voted in favor of the reforms "that we have undertaken in order to build a solid, representative, and legitimate democracy that benefits everyone."

New stage

"Peru is opening a new stage and is achieving it in democracy. These were the first extraordinary parliamentary elections in the history of our country," he emphasized.

The organization of these elections —as noted by the European Union Election Observation Mission (EUEOM)— demonstrated Peru's commitment to solve institutional and political challenges through democratic means.

Furthermore, President Vizcarra took the opportunity to thank the efforts undertaken by the electoral observation missions, both of the Organization of American States (OAS) and the European Union (EU) in the supervision of the process.

"The elections have been free and transparent, they relied on all the legal and constitutional guarantees, and their results represent the will and feelings of the Peruvian people," he highlighted.

The President received new year greetings from the diplomatic corps accredited in Peru during a ceremony held at the Government Palace in Lima.

At the event, the Head of State also thanked diplomats "for their valuable work deepening the friendship bonds between their governments and Peru."
