Nine U.S. legislators visited Peru's northern Trujillo City to deliver temporary shelters and monitor the progress made under "Temporary Shelter, Water and Sanitation" —a project supporting families displaced by Coastal El Niño.

As is known, Peru was hit hard by said climate phenomenon in the January-March period. The weather event was characterized by heavy rains, landslides and floods, which destroyed infrastructure and crops, leaving many citizens homeless.

Launched three months ago, the project targets households in La Libertad and Lambayeque regions.

The support was provided by the non-governmental organization (NGO) Save the Children, thanks to a U.S. Government donation of over US$2.4 million.

The delegation explored the Regional Emergency Operations Center (COER) facilities in Trujillo, where Save the Children staged a photographic exhibition to illustrate the emergency situation in the province.

Lawmakers were satisfied with the implementation of COER for its ability to support the government to respond to any emergency.

"COER—La Libertad is at the level of the best emergency response centers around the world, and we believe the money provided by the U.S. Government was well spent," legislator David Price (D-NC) expressed.

Afterwards, the bipartisan delegation from the United States Congress' House of Representatives visited one of the affected communities to verify the situation of collapsed dwellings and supervise the construction of temporary emergency shelters.

They also delivered household item kits and the first 10 temporary emergency shelters to families in Sol Naciente 1 and Sol Naciente 2 human settlements.

According to U.S. Republican Representative Peter Roskam, the Government of the United States has assisted over 1000 families in La Libertad and Lambayeque so far.

Likewise, the North American nation has handed over 659 temporary emergency shelters, 303 of which are placed in La Libertad and 356 in Lambayeque.
