08:00 | Lima, Sep. 19.

A bipartisan delegation from the United States Congress' House of Representatives has arrived in Peru for three days of meetings, as part of the House Democracy Partnership program.

The delegation is pleased to continue strengthening the important partnership initiated with the signing of a Partnership Agreement between the U.S. House of Representatives and Peruvian Congress in August 2009, continued through several visits for knowledge exchange and training purposes.

This visit thus serves to highlight the strong bipartisan support provided by the U.S. Congress to Peru.

During the visit, the House Democracy Partnership delegation will meet with leaders of the Peruvian Executive and Legislative Branches, various Congressional Commissions, and civil society.

The delegation will also travel to northern city of Trujillo to oversee the U.S. Government's humanitarian relief efforts aimed at assisting the Government and people of Peru, following Coastal El Niño flooding and landslides that hit the country earlier this year.

U.S. assistance to Peru during this crisis exceeded US$8.3 million.

The Commission is composed of legislators Peter Roskam (R-IL), David Price (D-NC), Stephen Knight (R-CA), Susan Davis (D-CA), Tom Rice (R-SC), Dina Titus (D-NV), Bill Flores (R-TX), Lucille Roybal-Allard (D-CA) and Norma Torres (D-CA).

The House Democracy Partnership is a bipartisan committee of twenty U.S. House of Representatives members. It works directly with partner countries around the globe to support the development of effective, independent and accountable legislative institutions.

These efforts help boost bilateral priorities, such as combating transnational organized crime and promoting democracy across the region.
