Some 1,040 temporary housing facilities will be built in Lambayeque and La Libertad regions —hit by Coastal El Niño — thanks to a US$2 billion investment by the United States Government.

The initiative will be implemented by the U.S. Agency for International Development – USAID and will benefit more than 1,200 families in said areas.

Announcement was made by Henry Flores Julca, Save the Children Program Coordinator in Lambayeque and La Libertad.

According to Flores, some 560 housing units will be built in Motupe, Jayanca, Pacora, Illimo, Tucume, Mochumi and Morrope districts following the launch of a Save the Children project.

Additionally, 80 Lambayeque families will be provided with cleaning tool kits for their homes.

Also, other 60 families will receive a bond to cover rent costs for three months.

Flores said Save the Children is working through a community-based approach. "First, we had to identify which communities are not being targeted."

"The Housing Ministry will set up 1068 housing units, and there are other non-governmental organizations (NGOs) involved," he continued.

It is worth noting attention needs to be paid to nearly 1,200 affected families whose houses collapsed in 59 rural communities across Lambayeque.

In addition to temporary accommodation, the project includes improvement of latrines as a way to prevent diseases.

Furthermore, a community water system will be installed in 15 rural communities hit by flooding.
