Peru's Paolo Guerrero shares message of gratitude to Russia

10:37 | Moscow (Russia), Jun. 14.

Peru's top striker and captain Paolo Guerrero took on Instagram Thursday to convey a message of thanks to Russia —the host of the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

The expression came a few hours before the big tournament's inauguration in Moscow.

Guerrero shared a photo wearing Peru's national team jersey and thanked the hospitality that hosts extended to him and the entire Inca squad.

"Thank you very much for the welcome, care, and love, Russia. We hope you spend a nice afternoon with your team," the Peruvian forward wrote.

Held at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow, the opening ceremony included musical performances, which generated a raucous atmosphere before Russia and Saudi Arabia met in the World Cup's first match.

The spectacle featured British pop star Robbie Williams and Russian soprano Aida Garifullina —one of Russia's most acclaimed young voices.

Brazil's legend Ronaldo joined the celebration, which was followed by the first Group A clash.
