Peru: PM's Congress speech to address employment, growth-oriented measures

14:28 | Lima, Apr. 30.

Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra on Monday said that Prime Minister Cesar Villanueva will propose measures to boost employment and economic growth as he sets out his administration's guidelines and requests Congress' confidence vote.

"Most of these measures aim to generate more jobs and growth in the economy. Plus, they intend to make economic growth translate into national welfare. This is what we want," the statesman expressed.

According to the Peruvian leader, he and Cesar Villanueva met this past weekend to make the final changes to the speech he will give Wednesday before Parliament.

"I'm sure the speech will be molded to reach these goals: greater growth and more jobs to improve Peruvians' quality of life," the Head of State emphasized.

According to Mr. Vizcarra, added to this is the need to formalize employment so that benefits are not only available to a minority group.

Likewise, he said Villanueva's presentation will display the country's current conditions and the direction the Government will take over the next three years.

His statements were made at the Order of Work award ceremony that honored five Peruvian nationals who contributed to the welfare of workers across the country.

Monsignor Luis Bambaren and union leader Mario Huaman were two of said awardees.

In his speech, the President reiterated his concern over the fact that Peru's poverty rate has risen one percentage point, saying the problem will remain unsolved if sources of employment are not obtained.

Given this situation —he stated— consideration needs to be given to how to create sources of decent work that respect working hours and contribute to improving quality of life.
