Education is fundamental to consolidate President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski's vision for a modern country, Prime Minister Fernando Zavala recently underlined.

Remarks were made Friday at the closing ceremony of the Annual Conference of Executives (CADE) for Education in the Peruvian capital Lima.

For that reason —he continued— education is the sector that takes the largest chunk (8%) of the national budget.

Funds will be allocated for wages, materials, and infrastructure. Plus, teachers' appraisal will remain as one of the main pillars.

"We have created a Government Center, where we set seven major government goals, such as improving education in rural areas. We keep track of such goal and its seven associated measures (like access to water and Internet in schools) month after month," the Cabinet chief explained.

Progress has been made in different scenarios like the residency program, secondary schools under a full school day regime, teachers' pay rise and the closure of the education infrastructure gap.

CADE for Education 2017 focused on access to first-rate secondary education and is considered the leading education forum in Peru.

The event brought together education sector authorities, politicians, as well as opinion and business leaders.
