Machu Picchu citadel has been chosen as South America's top tourist attraction according to the latest "The Wonders of the World" report, published by On The Go Tours —a travel company which highlights popular tourist destinations on Instagram.
In this sense, the Exports and Tourism Promotion Board (PromPeru) underlined the choice was made by Instagram users thanks to a report prepared by
On The Go Tours.
According to the travel enterprise,
Machu Picchu ranks 12th among the most photographed must-visit places around the globe.
It must be noted this report was prepared by analyzing top tourist attractions. To this end, the number of "hashtags" —mentioning these spots on Instagram— was taken into account.
The ranking is led by France's Eiffel Tower (1st), followed by U.K.'s Big Ben (2nd), U.S. Grand Canyon (3rd), England's London Eye (4th), U.S. Empire State Building (5th), U.S. Golden Gate Bridge (6th), England's Tower Bridge (7th), U.S. Statue of Liberty (8th), Spain's Sagrada Familia (9th), Italy's Rome Coliseum (10th), Canada's CN Tower (11th), and Peru's Machu Picchu (12th).
Situated on a mountain ridge above the Urubamba River (Cusco region),
Machu Picchu is an Inca citadel that is surrounded by temples, platforms, and stone water canals.
The spot served as a political, religious, and administrative center back in the Inca era. Currently, it is part of the Cultural Heritage of Humanity's list and a top tourist destination.
