Machu Picchu —Peru's main tourist attraction— was crowned the winner of the first edition of the Virtuoso Travel Dreams Tournament, after beating 16 other top international destinations.

Thanks to this recognition, the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu —one of the New Seven Wonders of the World— consolidates its position as one of the must-visit places around the globe.

After three weeks and four head-to-head rounds of competition, Machu Picchu managed to beat tourist destinations such as the Swiss Alps, Paris, Greece, Tuscany, and the Galapagos Islands.

In the final stretch, the ancient Sacred Valley even edged out New Zealand.

The online competition was organized by Vituoso, a network of the best luxury travel agencies, with more than 17,500 advisors worldwide.

"The fifteenth-century Inca citadel is a worthy champion, with its towering green peaks and stunning mazes of plazas, palaces, terraces, and temples," Virtuoso published on its blog.

Other awards

As is known, Machu Picchu has gained international recognition as one of the world's best places to visit over recent years.

Likewise, it was considered one of Instagram's most popular places in 2017.

It must be noted the Andean country also strengthened its position as South America's top destination among American tourists last year, by receiving 598,685 visitors, the Exports and Tourism Promotion Board (PromPeru) informed.
