Peru gains int'l recognition as adventure destination

08:20 | Lima, May. 3.

GlobalData digital media company highlighted that Peru enjoys a growing international recognition as one of the best adventure tourism destinations in the world.

In its Global Adventure Tourism report, GlobalData noted that classic surfing destinations —such as northern Peru— attract a large number of tourists from all over the globe who seek the best beaches to practice said sport.

These travelers —through their comments on social media— encourage people to visit and explore the region, thus attracting more tourists in general.

On the other hand, cycling in Peru has developed in a way that offers two alternatives: road cycling and mountain biking.

According to this study, other top adventure tourism destinations include countries such as Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, the United States, Canada, Spain, France, Egypt, China, and India.

That said, Iceland, Turkey, Nepal, and Ethiopia are the most popular destinations for adventure tourism worldwide.

Adventure tourist profile

The report also revealed that most adventure tourists around the world are single men with an average age between 32 and 35 years. Of the total, those who travel alone account for 17%, while the rest usually travel in groups.

Furthermore, GlobalData pointed out travelers —nowadays— can directly contact local tour operators thanks to technological advances and digital channels.

In this regard, a study of the adventure travel market in the United States —conducted by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO)— indicates that over 70% of adventure tourists from the North American country plan their travel itinerary on their own.

Lastly, GlobalData underlined adventure tourists prefer services provided by professionals and trained people, such as tour operators, guides, instructors, among others. Also, they are willing to accept a limited tourist infrastructure as long as their trip constitutes an authentic and exciting experience.
