Peru expresses solidarity with Myanmar and Thailand after 7.7-magnitude earthquake

Peru on Friday expressed its deep sorrow and solidarity with the governments and people of Myanmar and Thailand following the 7.7-magnitude earthquake, which caused casualties and severe material damage in both countries.

Similarly, the South American country urged its nationals to contact the Consular Section of the Peruvian Embassy in Thailand.

So far, no Peruvian citizens have been reported affected by the earthquake. 

However, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs urged nationals residing in or visiting the affected areas to remain alert and, in case of emergency, contact the Consular Section of the Peruvian Embassy in Thailand at: +66 818591222.

The Peruvian government also extended its condolences to the victims' families.

Likewise, it reaffirmed its commitment to international cooperation.


About the Earthquake

The earthquake was recorded on Friday at 12:50 p.m. local time (6:20 a.m. GMT) at a depth of 10 kilometers in Myanmar's Sagaing region. 

Its epicenter was located about 17 kilometers from Mandalay, the country's second-largest city, with a population of 1.2 million.

The United States Geological Survey —responsible for monitoring global seismic activity— reported that the earthquake may have caused hundreds of fatalities.

It issued an "orange alert," the second-highest on its warning scale, due to potential casualties and economic losses related to the disaster.
