Peru's Government and the European Union (EU) on Thursday signed an agreement to improve the functioning of Regional Development Agencies (RDAs), as well as the elaboration of Regional Development and Innovation Strategies in five regions of the Inca country.

According to the agreement, the Presidency of the Council of Ministers (PCM) will act as the implementing body for this project.

The entity will be supported by the Federal Republic of Germany and the Kingdom of Spain, through their official development cooperation agencies.

As is known, PCM —via its Decentralization Secretariat— promotes and runs RDAs to boost the articulation of national and regional government institutions.

It must be noted the creation of RDAs is in line with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development's (OECD) recommendations, which seek to strengthen PCM's coordinating role and increase regional governments' involvement in the promotion of inclusive economic development.

Said document was signed by Prime Minister Mercedes Araoz and EU Ambassador Diego Mellado.

The signing ceremony also featured German Ambassador to Peru Jörg Ranau, Spanish Embassy representative in Peru Jorge Sanchez, National Science and Technology Council (Concytec) Head Fabiola Leon-Velarde, and Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Nestor Popolizio.

Likewise, Production Minister Lieneke Schol participated as a witness.
