The 14th Ordinary Meeting of the Permanent Joint Commission for the Inspection of the Peruvian-Colombian Border (Comperif) approved an Activity Plan aimed at addressing issues such as sedimentation and erosion through monitoring of the Amazon River.

In a joint statement issued at the conclusion of the meeting, the members noted that they also addressed the freedom of navigation and transit along the Amazon River, aiming to facilitate and ensure full exercise in accordance with existing treaties.

"Similarly, binational work was agreed upon for the inspection and maintenance of boundary markers in the Geodetic Line sector of the border," the release specified.

Likewise, it was agreed to complete the technical studies previously initiated under this Joint Commission, which will contribute to identifying and implementing, by mutual agreement and under a shared-responsibility approach, solutions to the challenges affecting the common border.

The Comperif met in Lima on September 11-12, in line with the agreement reached by Foreign Affairs Ministers of both countries during their bilateral meeting in Bogota on August 21.

"The meeting was conducted in a spirit of strong cooperation, aimed at resuming Comperif activities," the communiqué stated regarding the recent session.

The delegations from Peru and Colombia also highlighted their commitment to undertaking joint efforts to preserve navigability conditions in the Atacuari-Leticia section of the Amazon River, for the benefit of riverside communities in both countries.

"Both delegations reaffirmed their willingness to continue working jointly in a cooperative and constructive manner, for the benefit of their Amazonian populations," it added.
