Peruvian President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski and Colombian counterpart Juan Manuel Santos on Tuesday announced the inter-institutional cooperation agreement signing to protect both nations' indigenous peoples in voluntary isolation and initial contact.
This agreement will enable both Governments to exchange information and experiences linked to reserve management, specialized public policy formulation, and strategic alliances establishment.
The document was signed by Peruvian Culture Minister Alejandro Neyra and Colombian Foreign Affairs Minister Maria Angela Holguin within the framework of the
4th Binational Cabinet.
"This is an important step to jointly take on binational challenges towards the protection of
indigenous people in voluntary isolation and initial contact," Neyra underlined.
Thanks to this agreement, both countries will make progress towards meeting the commitments of the
3rd Binational Cabinet, held in Peru's southern city of Arequipa in 2017.
This agreement will be immediately implemented.
It must be noted there are —at least— 13
indigenous peoples in voluntary isolation and initial contact living in the Inca country.
Due to their culture and immunological fragility, they represent one of the most vulnerable sectors of the population.
