President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski on Wednesday enacted the supreme decree approving the National Policy for Native Languages, Oral Tradition and Interculturalism.

The ceremony took place at Lima's Government Palace on the occasion of the UN International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples.

The event saw the presence of cabinet members led by Prime Minister Fernando Zavala and indigenous peoples' representatives.

In a brief speech, the Head of State made a call for the initiative to remain in force, thus turning it into a State policy. Otherwise, he said, it would become a "mere gesture."

"Long live diversity, long live the 1,000 Peruvian valleys, the 47 languages, the 55 native peoples, and long live diversity in Peru," he expressed.

This policy is the outcome of efforts undertaken by a multisectoral commission. It was crafted with the participation of native language speakers.
