Colca Valley —Arequipa region's
most visited tourist attraction— is preparing to welcome more than 15,000 domestic and foreign visitors wishing to enjoy the site's natural beauty and local traditions during Holy Week celebrations.
The religious observance begins on
Palm Sunday, which falls on March 25 this year and ends a week later on Easter Sunday (April 1).
The announcement was made by Colca Autonomous Authority (Autocolca) Manager David Valdivia, who explained the figure surpasses —by more than 4,000— the number of visitors the place received last year (11,000) during the same period.
Plenty of activities
Autocolca has prepared a varied program of activities so that holidaymakers can enjoy their visit as they explore the area.
Said activities include a procession of saints, the Way of the Cross, a photo exhibition, traditional dances such as Wititi, Camile, and others, as well as handicraft and culinary fairs in the Arequipa district of Yanque.
According to Valdivia, tourists can head to districts located in the valley area, where people celebrate Holy Week with
traditions dating back hundreds of years.
"Tourists will be able to enjoy religious festivities in each of the
Colca Valley districts, as well as typical food, customs, and the natural beauty of the area," David Valdivia stated.
About
The area offers numerous tourist services and —besides its natural beauty— visitors come to enjoy the majestic "flight of the condor" —an emblematic Andean bird.
The place is located four hours from Arequipa city, and there is a paved road leading to such natural site.
