Peru: Judiciary extends preventive detention of ex-President for 18 months

08:42 | Lima, Jul. 19.

The Judicial Branch has extended ex-President Pedro Castillo's preventive detention for 18-month period in the investigation into the alleged commission of rebellion, abuse of authority, and disturbance of public tranquility.

The ruling —issued by the Supreme Court's Permanent Criminal Chamber— declares the Public Ministry's request founded.

The court justified its decision mentioning "reasonable inference of the continued flight risk, especially given that the legal proceedings have a long way to go before completion within a reasonable timeframe (...). Thus, it is appropriate to extend the preventive detention."

As is known, the former president is accused of the alleged crime of rebellion and faces prosecutorial request for 34-year imprisonment.
