Peruvian musician Pedro Suarez-Vertiz passes away at 54

12:28 | Lima, Dec. 28.

Peruvian singer-songwriter Pedro Suarez-Vertiz died on Thursday at home in Lima's Miraflores district after battling a neurological disease that kept him away from the stage.

Suarez-Vertiz played a leading role in the Peruvian music scene not only for his songs, but for being a music icon who left a great legacy.

His death occurred on Thursday at 6:55 a.m.; so, National Police officers attached to Miraflores district's police station approached his home to certify the death.

The artist died at the age of 54, surprising his followers, since he had remained very active on social media, which helped him stay under the radar after he retreated from social life due to his illness.

In his posts, the iconic singer-songwriter not only shared thoughts or stories, but also gave his opinion on current national events.

Using his keyboard, Suarez-Vertiz managed to launch his book "Yo Pedro" (Me, Pedro) and stayed under the radar with his own band, which toured not only in Peru, but around the world.

He began his venture into music in the 1980s, founding Paranoia alongside his brother Patricio Suarez-Vertiz.

The band "Arena Hash," also composed of Christian Meier, Patricio himself, and Arturo Pomar Jr., was formed years later.

In 1993, the Peruvian singer decided to embark on a solo career with his first solo album, for whose production he signed a contract with Sony Music.

In 1996, he released his second album, which sold more than 40,000 copies and was certified triple platinum in Peru —something unthinkable in the country for an artist at that time.
