Under the motto "Let's Fight Together," the annual Telethon 2017 on Saturday raised S/11,717,981 (around US$3.5 million), surpassing the S/11,000,000 target set by organizers.
This year's edition kicked off on Friday, October 6, with the traditional opening bell ringing ceremony at the
Lima Stock Exchange (BVL) led by BVL Chairman Marco Antonio Zaldivar, Telethon Foundation President Isidro Vasquez and the fundraising event symbol Fabiana Rivas.
A great number of talented artists, celebrities, television channels, and the media in general gathered in Lima to raise the target amount, surpassed thanks to donations from generous Peruvians.
Broadcast by several local channels for more than 20 hours, the event included national and international performances, which made the collection even more entertaining.
Money was raised from phone calls and by renowned banks, department stores, drugstores and other establishments operating all over the country.
Telethon
Peru's
Telethon is a "televised marathon" which runs for many hours in favor of Hogar Clinica San Juan de Dios —a hospital and rehabilitation center for disabled children of scarce economic resources.
This way children with mental and physical disabilities —mainly from deprived areas— can get treatment at the said hospital.
