It is all red and white in Tacna's streets —and hearts— today as the southern region celebrates the 88th anniversary of its reincorporation into Peruvian sovereignty, which put an end to nearly 50 years of Chilean occupation.
Citizens woke up to an early morning cannon salute that reverberated across the skies, as if beckoning them to join commemorative activities.
Two hours later, the southern town paid homage to its women for their key role during the Chilean dominion.
A ceremony led by
President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski featured the laying of a wreath at the Tacna Woman's Bust and a paraliturgy conducted by Bishop Marco Cortez.
Flag Parade
The Head of State then marched alongside citizens in the Flag Parade, Tacna's traditional expression of patriotism and unshakeable love for its Peruvian roots.
Joining the top official were local civil, military and religious authorities, as well as members of the Women's Society of Tacna.
The parade drew to a close as marchers reached Paseo Civico Square, where a local woman carried out the flag raising act.
The region's reincorporation anniversary program also includes a range of artistic, cultural, sports, and gastronomic activities organized by Tacna Province Municipality in concert with public and private institutions.
