Peru's Foreign Affairs Minister Ricardo Luna on Tuesday presented the theme of the upcoming Summit of the Americas 2018: "Democratic Governance against Corruption."

The event —set to be hosted by Peru in 2018— is intended to strengthen democracy and tackle corruption in the hemisphere.

The Inca country thus seeks to give the event a "practical approach" geared towards achieving concrete results, in line with the Summits' objective to address priority common-interest subjects and agree on solutions to common issues.

"To this end, we have intended to identify a matter of interest for the hemisphere […] when choosing the Summit's theme," the government official explained.

"As a result, Peru has decided to present 'Democratic Governance against Corruption' as the main theme of the Lima Summit."

The decision was backed by OAS Secretary-General Luis Almagro, who said the theme "is clear proof of Peru's commitment to OAS' principles and values."

Similarly, the OAS head called the coming Summit of the Americas "a unique opportunity to agree on a course of action that addresses people's issues."

In this sense, Peru's Foreign Ministry said via Twitter the Lima Summit will serve to analyze various proposals, including the creation of an Inter-American Court against Corruption.

Announcement came while presiding over the Meeting of the Summit Implementation Review Group (SIRG), held this morning as part of the 47th Regular Session of the Organization of American States' (OAS) General Assembly.
