Peruvian President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski awarded Military Order of Ayacucho in the Grade of Grand Cross to Chavin de Huantar military operation members.

This is the first time the Presidency of the Peruvian Republic honored the Chavin de Huantar military commando — a special unit composed of Army and Naval Infantry members.

As is known, Chavin de Huantar commandos took part in the rescue of hostages held captive by terrorist Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement (MRTA) at the Japanese ambassador's residence in Peru back in 1997.

Held at the courtyard of Lima-based Government Palace, the ceremony saw the presence of the aforementioned commandos, State ministers, former MRTA hostages, authorities and guests in general.

"I am pleased to award this Military Order of Ayacucho in the Grade of Grand Cross to the Chavin de Huantar military operation, and I wish you carry it with honor recalling the glorious battle that sealed Americas' freedom," the Head of State said.

Armed Forces members —who took part in the rescue operation— formed up at the courtyard, standing out among attendees.

Active commandos were dressed in military uniform, while those retired wore civil suits.
