The Inca Trail leading to the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu will be closed through February to facilitate maintenance and conservation works, the Decentralized Culture Directorate of Cusco (DDCC) announced.

Works include the treatment of pathways, bridges, rainwater drainage canals, vegetation, handrails, camping areas and sanitary services.

"Personnel in charge will carry out this hard work along the Inca Trail, from Piscacucho to Intipunku, passing by Huayllabamba, Pacaymayo Alto, and Wiñay Wayna camping sites," DDCC head Vidal Pino said.

"Tour guides, tourist operators and agencies are familiar with these works, carried out every year in February. They are advised to adopt corresponding measures to prevent any setback that may affect visitors," Pino added.

The Inca Trail will be reopened for visitors on March 1, once maintenance works are completed.
