Qhapaq Ñan is important not only to our ancient history, but to our present, because its current use among different communities turn it into a living heritage that links peoples and allows their development.

Remarks were made by Giancarlo Marcone, general coordinator of Qhapaq Ñan Project, who noted the project’s importance to enhance this Andean road system.

According to Magaly Robalino Campos, head of Unesco’s National Office to Peru, Qhapaq Ñan is the major road system in South America.

Due to its complexity and international nature, she continued, Qhapaq Ñan brings important management, preservation challenges, but also an unprecedented opportunity for local development.

On the other hand, when asked about Qhapaq Ñan’s involvement with development and local needs, Ichu’s Mayor Antonio Mamani said: “I have hope for this project. We should promote tourism in Ichi, but we have previously met with the United Nations Development Programme—UNDP, so we expect these gatherings will yield good results.”

While speaking at the forum, UNDP officials noted the importance of community-based tourism as an alternative to economic development.
